Our History

Artigues is rich in history, with evidence of human occupation dating back more than 40,000 years, as evidenced by the prehistoric cave of Rigabe. The current village, nestled in greenery, houses an 18th-century church, Sainte-Foi, with its Renaissance wooden altarpiece and its small two-bay bell tower. The picturesque alleys and hiking trails will lead you to discover magnificent landscapes and exceptional viewpoints of Mont Sainte-Victoire and Mont-Major.

In the late 19th century, the line of the "Chemin de Fer de Provence (C.P)" was launched. The company of the Southern Railway of France obtained the concession (for 99 years) on August 17, 1885, it was officially constituted on December 3, 1885. With a total length of 211 km, the line will go from Nice to Meyrargues (near Aix) passing through Grasse, Draguignan, Barjols... Up to 500,000 passengers will be transported per year. The Draguignan-Lorgues-Salernes section was inaugurated on April 23, 1888. The line crossed different rivers: the Var, the Loup, the Siagne, the Florièye... by numerous viaducts and tunnels.
